Berries and Chia Seed Jam

Mix n match your favourite fresh or frozen berries to make this super simple and delicious chia-based jam!

When I moved out last year I quickly found my go-to breakfast, which was toasted bread + nut butter + homemade berries and chia jam. Not only did making my own jam using my big bag of No Name frozen berries save me money, but it also allowed me to adjust the sweetness and use alternative sweeteners. The frozen berry blend I would use included strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blueberries.

Now that summer is approaching (it is currently April as I type this), you might want to try swapping frozen berries for fresh berries. Even better if they’re from your local farmers market!

Another great aspect of this jam is the chia seeds, which contain an array of nutrients and health benefits. Most notable is the rich source of dietary fibre, which aids in healthy digestion and potentially reduces risks of heart diseases (via Journal of Food Science and Technology)

Ingredients

You can use an assortment of berries of your choice, or even just one type of berry! The jam pictured in this post uses fresh strawberries and blackberries, since both were on sale at my local grocery store. If you’re using fresh strawberries, remove the leaves and dice them up before cooking.

Other ingredients include chia seeds, fresh lemon juice and zest, and a sweetener of your choice (granulated sugar or monk fruit sweetener works best).

Serving suggestions

I’ll never get sick of spreading this highly addictive jam on toast, but sometimes I have a little leftover after finishing a loaf of bread, so I’ll find other ways to use up the jam. Here are some ideas to get you inspired:

  • swirl into a yogurt bowl or oatmeal
  • use as a ice cream sundae topping
  • elevate a stack of pancakes or waffles
